Can You Wear Invisalign While Playing Sports?

Playing sports does not have to interrupt progress toward a straighter smile. Because Invisalign aligners are removable and fit closely over the teeth, they can work well for active patients who want an orthodontic option that fits around practices, games, and workouts. The key is knowing when the trays can stay in place and when a protective mouthguard should take priority.

At Densley Dental in Henderson, Dr. Aman Sidhu brings broad experience across general, cosmetic, and specialty dentistry. His background includes work in multiple dental practices, leadership as a managing dentist, and service through the USC Mobile Clinic in remote communities. As the team dentist of the Las Vegas Raiders, he also has firsthand familiarity with the dental concerns athletes may face.

Dr. Sidhu and his team help patients decide how to manage Invisalign safely without losing momentum in treatment.

Can Invisalign Be Worn During Sports?

Invisalign can generally remain in place during low-contact activities such as running, cycling, weight training, golf, or tennis. The aligners fit closely over the teeth and should not interfere with breathing or ordinary movement.

Contact and high-impact sports require additional precautions. Invisalign aligners are not designed to replace an athletic mouthguard and may not provide enough protection from a blow to the face.

When Should Athletes Remove Their Aligners?

Aligners should typically be removed before participating in sports that require a mouthguard, including:

  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Basketball
  • Lacrosse
  • Wrestling
  • Boxing or martial arts

A properly fitted sports mouthguard should be worn instead. Placing a mouthguard over Invisalign may create an improper fit and reduce its ability to protect the teeth.

After practice or competition, athletes should rinse their mouths or brush their teeth before reinserting their aligners whenever possible.

How Can Athletes Stay on Schedule?

Invisalign usually needs to be worn for approximately 20 to 22 hours each day. Removing the trays for a game or practice should not disrupt treatment as long as they are returned promptly afterward.

Helpful habits for athletes using Invisalign include keeping a protective aligner case nearby, carrying a travel toothbrush, and avoiding wrapping trays in a tissue, which may cause them to be lost or discarded. Aligners should also be kept away from heat, which can distort their shape.

What Happens If an Aligner Is Damaged?

A cracked or warped aligner may no longer move the teeth correctly. Athletes should contact their dentist rather than continue wearing a tray that feels loose, sharp, or visibly damaged. Depending on the treatment stage, the dentist may recommend using the previous tray, proceeding with the current one, or ordering a replacement.
