What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over a few months the bone grows around it, and once it is solid, a custom porcelain crown is attached on top. The result is a tooth that does not slip, does not decay, and does not rely on the teeth next to it for support. Single tooth implant

One post and one crown. This is the most predictable, longest-lasting way to replace a single missing tooth, and unlike a bridge it leaves your neighboring teeth untouched.

Implant bridge for several missing teeth

When three or more teeth in a row are missing, two implants can anchor a bridge. A traditional bridge has to be cemented onto natural teeth, which weakens them over time. An implant bridge does not.

Implant-supported and snap-on dentures

For patients missing most or all of their teeth, a few implants can lock a full denture in place. No adhesive, no slipping while you eat or talk, and far less bone loss than a conventional denture. Many of our patients who struggled with loose dentures for years describe this as life-changing.

The Implant Process, Step by Step

1. Consultation and 3D planning

We take a CT scan and digital iTero scan to measure your bone and plan the exact position of the implant before the day of surgery. You will see the plan and get a written estimate.

2. Placement

The implant is placed under local anesthetic in about an hour. Most patients say it is easier than having a tooth pulled. If you need a bone graft, it is often done at the same visit.

3. Healing

Over three to six months the implant fuses with your bone. If the missing tooth is visible when you smile, we make a temporary so you are never without a tooth.

4. Your new tooth

Our in-house lab crafts your crown, bridge, or denture attachment to match your natural teeth. We check the fit, the bite, and the color, then you are done.

Caring for Implants

Brush and floss the implant like a natural tooth and keep your regular cleanings. Our hygienists check the gum and bone around each implant at every visit. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes are the two biggest risks to implant success, and we will talk honestly with you about both.
