How Braces Work

Braces have three parts: a small bracket bonded to each tooth, an archwire running across them, and the ties that hold the wire in place. The wire is shaped to the arch your teeth should form, and as it works back toward that shape it carries your teeth with it. Every few weeks we change the wire or adjust the tension, so the movement stays gradual, controlled, and planned rather than left to chance.

Your Braces Treatment at Densley Dental

1. Exam, x-rays, and a plan

We take digital x-rays and photos, look at how your teeth meet, and map where each one needs to move. You leave that first visit knowing what braces would involve, roughly how long it would take, and what it costs.

2. Placing the braces

Bonding the brackets and threading the first wire takes about an hour, and none of it hurts. Your teeth feel tender for a few days afterward while they adjust to the pressure, which soft food and over-the-counter pain relief handle easily.

3. Adjustments every few weeks

You come in every four to eight weeks so we can change the wire, check your progress, and confirm the teeth are tracking the way we planned. The visits are short, and keeping them is what holds treatment to schedule.

4. Removal and retainers

When your teeth are where they belong, the brackets come off and we polish everything smooth. A retainer made in our in-house lab holds the result, and wearing it is what keeps your teeth from drifting back.

Braces vs. Invisalign

Braces are fixed to your teeth, so they work around the clock whether you remember them or not, and they give the dentist the most control over difficult movements. Invisalign is removable and nearly invisible, which suits adults with mild to moderate crowding. Teenagers, complex bites, and heavily rotated teeth usually do better in braces. Dr. Sidhu will tell you which one your case actually calls for, not which one sounds better.

Living With Braces

• Skip anything hard or sticky. Ice, nuts, caramel, and hard candy break brackets.

• Cut apples, carrots, and corn off the cob into pieces instead of biting straight in.

• Brush after every meal and use a floss threader or water flosser around the wire.

• Keep the orthodontic wax we give you handy for the first week, when a bracket rubs.
