Post-care instructions after your first Invisalign appointment

After your initial Invisalign appointment, your focus should be on consistent wear, proper aligner care, and managing any initial discomfort.

Aligner wear and сhanges

  • Wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, only removing them for eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing, and flossing. The closer you adhere to the 22-hour recommendation, the better your results will be and the smoother your treatment progression.
  • Change aligners as directed: Typically, you'll switch to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks, as instructed by Dr. Sidhu. It's crucial to follow the prescribed schedule and not advance to the next aligner prematurely, even if the current one feels loose.

Oral hygiene

  • Remove aligners before eating and drinking (except water): This prevents food particles and beverages from getting trapped and causing staining or damage to your aligners and teeth.
  • Brush and floss after every meal and before reinserting aligners: This is critical to prevent plaque buildup and maintain good oral hygiene throughout your treatment.
  • Clean your aligners daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to gently scrub the inside and outside of your aligners. You can use a mild, clear liquid soap for a more thorough cleaning or Invisalign cleaning crystals for soaking. Avoid using toothpaste or harsh chemicals like bleach or alcohol, as these can damage the aligners.
  • Store aligners safely: When not in your mouth, always place your aligners in the case provided to prevent loss or damage.

Managing discomfort

  • Expect initial discomfort: It's normal to experience some discomfort, pressure, or soreness as your teeth adjust to the aligners, especially when switching to a new set. This typically subsides within a few days.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to help manage the discomfort.
  • Soft foods: Consider sticking to soft foods like yogurt, soups, and smoothies during the first few days after getting new aligners or when experiencing soreness.
  • Orthodontic wax: If the edges of your aligners are causing irritation to your gums or cheeks, apply a small amount of orthodontic wax to create a protective barrier.
  • Cold compresses: Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help numb the area and reduce swelling.
